MECA board, the group of people that run the Qwest Center in Omaha, have decided not to support the proposed new downtown ballpark planned to be built in parking lot D of the Qwest Center. David Sokol said in the Omaha World Herald that building the new ballpark in parking lot D is "off the table from MECA's standpoint." Sokol is the chairman of the MECA board and is also a member of the 6 person committee set up by Mayor Mike Fahey to determine if building a new stadium is feasible.
MECA protests that if the new ballpark were to be built in parking lot D that it would limit the parking situation (obviously) and disallow the Qwest Center from possibly expanding later in the future.
A new downtown stadium is being proposed for the new site of the College World Series. Mayor Mike Fahey is trying to secure a new contract with the NCAA for a 10-20 year deal that would keep the CWS in Omaha. Part of that contract requirement is to either rebuild Rosenblatt Stadium or build a new one.
