Creighton vs Savannah State

The Creighton Bluejays look to extend this season's winning streak in the Qwest Center against Savannah State tonight.  Coming off a 74-62 win over in-state rival Nebraska, the Bluejays will be confident and ready to play.

The Tigers of Savannah State come into the game with a mediocre 5-4 record.  But there is really nothing mediocre about those five wins.  The Tigers have been reveling over new head coach Howard Broadnax in the last two years who has done nothing short of turn the Tiger's program around 180 degrees.  The season before Broadnax came in 2005, Savannah State went 0-28, making them only the second winless team in the NCAA in the past 50 years.

The Bluejays will rely on their newest playmaker P'Allen Stinnett who is averaging double digits this year.  Following Stinnet on the court is no easy task, the Freshman Forward is always moving and shaking and showing off his ball handling skills.  Let's hope that Stinnett shows us another big time dunk against the Tigers like he did against the Huskers last week.

Linkin Park Announces Show at Qwest Center

Alt-rock megastars Linkin Park will bring their brand of hard rock to the Qwest Center on February 12.  The Qwest Center is one of only 15 scheduled dates on Linkin Park's tour and will be the first stop on the tour as well.

Linkin Park got their big break in the early 2000's with hits such as "Crawling" and "In The End."  Three albums later, including the collaboration with rapper Jay Z, the band has become a household name and one of the biggest rock acts performing today.

The band will doing something very different in terms of the concert experience.  Linkin Park will offer a digital souvenir package with their tickets which will get the fan a copy of the live performance at the Qwest Center as well as photos of the concert.

UNO Mavericks Win and Tie Against Alaska

The UNO Mavericks played two great games at the Qwest Center this past weekend against the Alaska Nanooks.

On Friday, the Mavericks relied on defenseman Ed Del Grosso who scored two goals including one in the end of the third period to win.  The Mavs beat the Nanooks 4-3.  It was an uphill battle after the first quarter where the Mavs fell behind by two.  UNO goaltender Eric Aarnio, who had a shut out last week against Ferris State, had another great game stopping 19 shots.

The Mavericks were not as lucky Saturday as they were at the Qwest Center on Friday.  It was Alaska's  Landon Novotney who saved the Nanooks from a sweep with two late goals to tie.  The final score was 4-4 with one overtime played.

The Mavs head to South Bend to take on Notre Dame this next week.

Creighton Defeats In-State Rival Nebraska

The Qwest Center crowd was a mix of Husker red and Creighton blue on Saturday as the only two Division 1 programs in the state faced off.  Creighton walked away with the victory Saturday winning 74-62 and also walked away with bragging rights for a year.

The Qwest Center sold out of tickets for the Creighton Bluejays vs the Nebraska Cornhuskers and the arena was packed.  The Bluejays undoubtedly got the most out of the meeting by dominating in the first half of play and never letting go.  The Bluejays led the Huskers 47-20 at halftime.  Husker coach Doc Sadler said it best to the Omaha World Herald, "I don't want this to sound wrong, but we took the crowd out of the game."

The Huskers rallied in the second half, but it was not enough.  Plagued by turnovers and an unimpressive showing from Nebraska center Aleks Maric, who dominated in last year's meeting with the Bluejays, the Huskers fell to their only other in-state competition.

Creighton Bluejays vs Nebraska Cornhuskers

The sea of red will invade the fans in blue and white at the Qwest Center this Saturday as the Creighton Bluejays take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in what has become a historic in state basketball rivalry.

The rivalry between Creighton and Nebraska shows some fans their true colors.  Fans from Omaha grew up watching Creighton basketball and Nebraska football (it's hard to watch Creighton football), but fans outside of Omaha likely side with the scarlet and red for every sport.

Nebraska leads the all-time series record with 23-17 and beat the Bluejays in their last meeting in Lincoln.  Creighton historically does better in Omaha against the Huskers and leads the series there 12-9 and has won five of the last six meetings at the Qwest Center.

Creighton comes in as the favorite in the game on Saturday after coming off two impressive wins including one against DePaul.  Nebraska looks just as strong with a 3-0 record and packs an impressive weapon in Center Aleks Maric who leads the Huskers in points and rebounds.

Underwood and Urban Announce Qwest Center Stop

Keith Urban and Carrie Underwood, two of countries biggest acts, will travel to the Qwest Center on March 7 of next year.  Urban played a show at the Qwest Center this year in July, see the review.  According to the Omaha World Herald, Underwood has never performed in Omaha as a solo act.

The tour is ridiculously named the Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Carnival Ride Tour.  It mixes the two acts most recent albums including Urban's latest Love, Pain & the Whole Crazy Thing, and Underwood's Carnival Ride.

The show will definitely cater towards country fans that like pop music as well.  Both performers blend country and pop flavors to each make their own individual modern sound.

Tickets go on sale December 1 at the Qwest Center.

Goalie is Star Against Ferris State

Shouts of Aarnio! Aarnio! could be heard echoing through the Qwest Center on Sunday.  The Senior goalie, part of a three goalie rotation, stopped an impressive 17 goals Sunday to help lead his UNO Mavericks to a win over Ferris State.

The Mavericks struggled on the Qwest Center ice on Friday against Ferris State, losing 5-1 to the team that swept Ohio State just the week before.  UNO Sophomore goaltender Jeremie Dupont was keeping an eye on the goal that night.

This loss likely led UNO Maverick's coach Mike Kemp to start Senior goalie Eric Aarnio on Sunday.  Aarnio had been in the shadows of goalies before him and new goalies that were supposed to be stars.  Aarnio proved that he was worth more than what coaches and fans thought of him.  And best of all, it was parent's day on Sunday so his parents got to see him shine.

UNO Mavericks vs Ferris State Tonight

It will be a sports filled weekend at the Qwest Center as the UNO Mavericks hockey team will play a two game series starting tonight against Ferris State.  The Creighton Bluejays basketball team will play Saturday against Mississippi Valley State.

The UNO Mavericks will get a break from their early tough schedule tonight against Ferris State.  The Mavs will build on the momentum of last weekend's games in Columbus, Ohio where they swept Ohio State.  Forward Bryan Marshall was the go to guy last week against Ohio State.  Marshall scored the first goal in the first game and set the tone for the rest of the series.

The last time Ferris State came to the Qwest Center was in the 2005 season where they were swept by the Mavericks.  Let's hope the Mavs can continue their success tonight!

Brad Paisley Performs Tonight

Brad Paisley will show off his Country Music Award winning voice to the Qwest Center tonight.  Paisley is a relative newcomer in Country music at only 35.  Paisley began in 1995 as a country writer for other acts before he leaped to stardom in 1999 with the release of his first solo album Who Needs Pictures.  Paisley's songs lean more toward traditional country but include some modern pop influences.

Paisley's live shows are almost as popular as his music and looks.  He is a very energetic performer and likes loud guitars.  On previous stops this tour he has used a cat walk that extends into the audience.  Expect him to make full use out of the catwalk as he likes to run around a lot during his shows.

Check out Paisley's new video "Letter to Me" in which he travels to his hometown to film the video.  The song is written in the present day as a letter to himself when he was 17.  It talks about some of the people that he dealt with while he was 17 and the video actually includes the people from his town that he is talking about in the song.

Van Halen and Matchbox 20 Announce Shows

Concert season is heating up in Omaha as both Van Halen and Matchbox 20 announced that they will both be stopping by the Qwest Center to perform in February.

Van Halen will perform first on February 4 at the Qwest Center.  The hard rock band will be fronted by their original frontman David Lee Roth.  Sammy Hagar is apparently not in the running anymore for the lead singer role as he is recording solo CDs that frankly should only be used as coasters for drinks.  Another weird addition for Van Halen this tour will be their bassist.  Van Halen will enlist Eddie Van Halen's 16 year old son Wolfgang to play bass guitar.

Matchbox 20 will return to the road after more than 4 years away, according to KETV.  Rob Thomas and the gang will play on February 26 to support their most recent album Exile on Mainstream.  The album hit #3 on the Billboard charts and is a more mature departure from their previous work.
