February Concert Preview: Van Halen

One of the most talked about concerts in the Omaha Metro lately has been the Van Halen concert in February at the Qwest Center.  On February 4, Van Halen will rock the Qwest Center's over 18,000 seats in classic Van Halen style.

With original Van Halen singer David Lee Roth at the helm, the concert should please fans of the earlier Van Halen days.  Sorry, no Sammy Hagar this time folks!  On board now is bassist Wolfgang Van Halen,  replacing former bassist Michael Anthony who left the band in 2006 to pursue other interests.

The band has just as many interesting things happen to them off stage than they've on stage.  From the ever-revolving lead singer spot to the countless trips to rehab, the Van Halen story is truly a rock and roll odyssey.  Van Halen probably has enough material to fill three Behind the Music episodes on VH1!

Carlos Santana Announces Show at Qwest Center Omaha

Carlos Santana has just announced that he will play a concert at the Qwest Center Omaha on April 22 this year.  Santana has a career that spans over five decades, and has had radio hits in every decade since the 60's.

Known mostly for his work with Santana Band in the sixties and seventies, Santana has had crossover success in the late nineties and early 2000s.  Santana is known for his incredible live concerts and upbeat Latin style.  No other guitar great has ever put such a Latin flavor to their music quite like Santana has.

Santana got his start with his band at the original Woodstock festival.  In fact, the band had not even recorded their first official album before they played to a packed concert hall at Woodstock.  The recognition from that legendary concert gave them enough momentum to shoot their careers into super-stardom.

Qwest Center's Chairman of the Board Quits Stadium Committee

David Sokol, the chairman of the board of MECA (which runs the Qwest Center), has quit Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey's stadium committee that looked at possible sites to put a new stadium that would house the College World Series.

Sokol quit the committee because they were strongly considering putting the new College World Series stadium in Parking lot C of the Qwest Center Omaha.  According to the Omaha World Herald, Sokol quit because of a conflict of interest between the Mayor's stadium committee and MECA's board.

Sokol and the MECA board think that Parking lot C of the Qwest Center would be a bad place to put the new College World Series stadium because it would limit Qwest Center parking and screw up traffic in the area.  The plan would take out portions of 12th Street downtown!

For anyone that gets annoyed with Qwest Center parking, this is good news.  With Sokol quiting it puts extreme pressure on the stadium committee to find a new spot for the CWS stadium.

Miami-Ohio Sweeps UNO at Qwest Center

It was a rough weekend for the UNO Maverick's hockey team at the Qwest Center Omaha.  The Mavericks lost to the Miami-Ohio Redhawks 6-3 on Friday and 4-1 on Saturday.  Both games started off very evenly matched, but during the second quarters the Redhawks stepped it up against the Mavs.

The Miami Redhawks are the #2 team in the nation and now boast a 21-3 record.  Well, it's good to see that some other teams haven't done to hot against Miami!

The Mavericks looked a little sluggish against the speed of the Redhawk offense.  But, one of the best Mav plays of the game came from Senior Bryan Marshall.  Marshall single-handedly skated through three Miami defenders to flip the puck over the Redhawk goalie's leg.

These were the last games that the UNO Mavericks will play hockey at the Qwest Center until February.  The Mavs take on the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Qwest Center Omaha Friday February 8 and Saturday February 9.

UNO Mavericks vs Miami-Ohio Redhawks

The UNO Mavericks have a tough two games ahead of them as they take on the University of Miami-Ohio hockey team tonight and tomorrow at the Qwest Center Omaha.

The UNO Maverick's hockey team has had a hard time against Miami in this season.  The Mavericks suffered a 12-4 loss at Oxford in October.  The Redhawks have an impressive 11-3-0 CCHA conference record and boasts a 19-3-0 overall season record. 

The Mavericks have maintained a balanced home field advantage.  At home at the Qwest Center, the Mavericks series with the Redhawks is 4-4.  UNO swept Western Michigan twice last week in Michigan and will bring that momentum to the ice tonight.  UNO Maverick captain Bryan Marshall has scored a point in his last nine games and holds the NCAA season's best assist record this season at 23 assists.

Creighton Bluejays Run Over The Evansville Purple Aces

It was hustle on defense that won the game for the Creighton Bluejays at the Qwest Center last night.  Creighton stole 12 balls, blocked nine shots and forced 19 total turnovers to total 25 points.  The Bluejays won the game 77-59.

The Bluejays played an explosive game of basketball last night against the Purple Aces.  The Bluejays scored the first seven points of the game and put up 14 unanswered points at the beginning of the third quarter. Needless to say, Creighton basketball ticket holders at the Qwest Center got their moneys worth, the crowd was on their feet cheering and chanting during the 14 point run.  I actually thought the noise meter on the big screen was finally going to max out!  It always just gets so close!

Congratulations to Dane Watts, Creighton basketball's only returning starter, for completing his 100th career start last night at the Qwest.  Watts put up 11 points and a whopping eight rebounds for the Jays.

The next home game at the Qwest Center Omaha for the Bluejays is Saturday, January 19 against Indiana State. 

Creighton Bluejays vs Evansville Purple Aces Tonight

The Qwest Center will host the Creighton Bluejays and the Evansville Purple Aces tonight for what should be some great Missouri Valley Conference play.  Creighton Men's Basketball comes into the game with a 10-3 overall record and a conference record of 1-2.

Evansville will not be a pushover but the Bluejays should have a very good chance tonight of improving their Missouri Vally Conference record of 1-2.  The Bluejays must be frustrated with that conference record after having a great run early on in the season against non-conference teams such as Drexel and in-state rivals Nebraska.  The Purple Aces have a 0-3 MVC record and lack the speed and teamwork that the Bluejays have.  Creighton averages a little over 40 points per game off the bench (from players that don't start).  To put that into perspective, the Bluejays only scored a total of 50 points on Saturday against Missouri State.

Creighton vs Evansville Tomorrow Night

The Creighton Bluejays will play their first basketball game of 2008 at the Qwest Center tomorrow night against the Evansville Purple Aces.  Creighton comes off a close away game win against Missouri State 50-49.  P'Allen Stinnett saved the game with a free throw in the last minute to secure the win.

Stinnett will be the go-to guy tomorrow night after his performance Saturday night against Missouri State.  Stinnett scored a whopping 18 points, more than a third of all of the Bluejay's points in that game.

Dane Watts will make his 100th career start for the Bluejays vs Evansville on Wednesday night at the Qwest Center .  Watts ranks fifth in active player career game starts in the NCAA.  Interestingly enough, the only game that Watts didn't start in his career was against Evansville in 2004.

Elmo Brightens Omaha Audience's Day

Thousands of kids were entertained and taught important life lessons at the Qwest Center this weekend by Elmo, Big Bird, Bert and Ernie.  In fact, the whole Sesame Street gang was on hand in Omaha to perform Sesame Street Live: When Elmo Grows Up at the Qwest Center.

Elmo and company danced and sang their way through a journey to find out who they are and what they want to be when they grow up.  The Sesame Street gang learned in the end that even more important than finding out what they want to do when they grow up is having the attitude of a kid when they grow up.

The Qwest Center was transformed from an arena to a theatre to accommodate for the Elmo performances.  Not surprisingly though the seating at the Qwest Center looked more like a playground than a theatre or arena.  Kids were dancing and playing in the aisles that created a happy performance that kids and parents alike were sure to enjoy.

Family Fun With Elmo

Elmo and the whole Sesame Street gang will be at the Qwest Center all weekend to provide fun, songs and life lessons for the whole family.  The show is called Sesame Street Live: When Elmo Grows Up and it follows Elmo on his journey to find out what he wants to do when he grows up.

This show isn't for the same crowd that may go to Van Halen or Linkin Park at the Qwest Center but it will be entertaining none the less.  If you are a kid or have kids than this show will definitely be for you.  The Sesame Street Live series has received great reviews each year that they put it on.

Kids and adults alike will be able to sing along to the songs that Elmo and the gang perform.  With classics such as "Down on the Corner" and "Give a Little Love" and Sesame Street classics such as "I Love Trash" and "Itsy Bitsy Spider," everyone will be singing along by the end of the show.
