Two weeks from today, Omaha's newest swimming pools will arrive from Italy.
The pools are being shipped overseas in preparation for the U.S. Olympic Swimming trials, which run from June 29 through July 6 at the Qwest Center.
By the time the last parts of the pools arrive, it will have taken six weeks to ship two free-standing pools from Myrtha Pools in Stiviere, Italy. Some of the materials are already in Omaha and under lock and key. The rest of the materials will be coming by train and will stop in Council Bluffs, where they will be taken by truck to the Qwest Center.
Once they reach the Qwest Center, officials will construct two pools. One pool will be located in the convention center and will be used as a warmup pool. The second pool will be set up in the middle of the main arena, and both pools should be finished by May 19.
The pools will get a pre-Trials workout in early June, as the Qwest Center will play host to the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational starting June 5. It will be a good training run to prepare for the Olympic Trials, which will start Sunday, June 29.
